San andrés yaa
Each year, on May 3rd, the zapoteca community of San Andrés Yaa, offers a patronal celebration in the honor of San Andrés Apostol. More than two thousand people congregate on one of the highest points of the Sierra to celebrate with music, traditional food and mezcal. This small town with no more than 600 inhabitants, transforms itself into a massive reunion of zapoteco indians and seven metal bands-with 20 to 25 musicians in each band- that play nonstop for 5 days.
Women form a huge cooking battalion, some of them working in a spontaneous factory of big corn tortillas, some working around gigantic pots of tasteful beef soup, beef dishes and coffee. There is a big respect for this tradition among the visitors but as mezcal flows during the celebration, the heat arises at dawn. It is particularly interesting to see community police officers taking care of the drunk with a wheelbarrow.
